OKWe are often asked why our furniture isn’t made entirely from recycled materials. That’s why we’d like to give you an insight into the composition of our corrugated cardboard and its recycled content.
Our cardboard furniture is sustainable in every way. This is due to both the material —corrugated cardboard — and its circular nature, as it is fully recyclable and can be reintegrated into the raw material cycle.
For production, we use special heavy-duty cardboard composed of both recycled and fresh fibers. The recycled content varies by product, depending on the required properties. Different types of corrugated cardboard are used, each with varying proportions of fresh and recycled fibers. A closer look at the structure of our corrugated cardboard makes this even clearer.
Our corrugated cardboard is essentially made up of smooth and corrugated paper layers. Most of our products are crafted from double-wall corrugated cardboard, which consists of two fluted paper layers with a smooth paper layer in between. The three inner layers of the cardboard are typically made entirely of recycled paper fibers. The smooth outer layers, known as kraft liners, are glued to the outside to provide the board with stability and durability. To maintain the strength of these kraft liners, they contain up to 20% recycled fibers. This is because recycled fibers are shorter due to the preparation process, while long virgin fibers are necessary for optimal strength.
The type of corrugated cardboard used can vary between products, primarily depending on the thickness of the inner and/or outer layers. As a result, the recycled content ranges between 54% and 80%, depending on the specific cardboard composition.
Sustainability is also our top priority for virgin fibers. We only use FSC-certified corrugated cardboard to manufacture our products. This means the virgin paper fibers come from sustainably managed European forests, where important environmental and social standards are followed. The FSC guidelines regulate pesticide use and ensure forests are cared for responsibly. For example, only select trees can be felled in a group, avoiding clear-cutting. Tree tops and branches must remain to nourish the forest, and in larger forest areas (over 1,000ha), 10% must remain unmanaged as natural forest. Only 20% of non-native tree species may be planted to maintain a resilient, natural forest. FSC certification also ensures better occupational health and safety for foresters and wages in line with collective agreements.
Although our corrugated cardboard is FSC-certified, you won’t find the FSC seal on our products yet. This is because the corrugated cardboard plant where the material is processed is not yet FSC-certified. The FSC seal can only be used when every step in the production chain holds the certification. We're working on getting this certification to make our sustainability even more transparent and traceable.
